Signposts Along the Way: Signpost 9 – Part 2 of 4: Birthday Presence

11 Jul

When my birthday arrived, we all traveled to Connecticut very early in the morning. We were told to get there with plenty of time to spare as there would be a long waiting line even if we had tickets. Besides being the hottest day of the year, the humidity was nearing 100%. So between the expected long lines and oppressive heat, I was a little apprehensive about standing outside for any length of time.

After arriving, we parked and took our place in the line that had already formed the night before. It was incredible how many people were already in attendance. I was concerned that between the arduous outdoor line and the less than comfortable weather conditions that dad would become increasingly impatient. Instead, he was a trooper and stood in line anticipating the new event for hours. As we waited, I was amazed to hear the stories of healings and miracles from the other believers who were also awaiting entry. Despite the unpleasant weather everyone around me was very upbeat and positive. It was quite a nice surprise.

When I finally had a few minutes to take a look around, I noticed that we were standing outside this monumental, stone Catholic cathedral. Hundreds of steps swirled towards the Cathedral’s entrance enhanced by shimmering blue stained glass windows. The church bells echoed in the distance. From where I stood, It looked like it could hold thousands upon thousands of people, but I think my judgement was probably skewed by my anticipation. Regardless, this was one big church!

After a few hours of trudging through the outdoor line, we finally made it to the church entrance. We gladly handed our tickets over to the smiling ushers as we were welcomed by the cool gusts from dozens of giant, oscillating fans. The atmosphere inside the church was even more enthralling as it was filled with elegance and simplified beauty. Its magnificence bellowed that something wonderful was soon to come.
